Gardens for Kids Schools Chosen
Nov 17 2008
Building on the success of their ‘Gardens For Kids’ pilot project at Concord Elementary in Milwaukie, ProGrass Landscape Care & Design is announcing the next two schools for the program. The nex two schools for 2008 are Creative Science School in Portland and Alberta Rider Elementary in Tigard.
The goals of ProGrass’ inovative ‘Gardens For Kids’ program aims to help public elementary schools create gardens and give students hands-on opportunities for nature learning.
Creative Science School will receive help from ProGrass with design, planning and construction of an edible garden in the school’s courtyard area. The long-term goal of Creative Science School is to utilize the edible gardens to incorporate a scratch kitchen into the school lunch program and devise a curricula utilizing the school’s kitchen classroom to showcase local food, nutrion and healthy eating for students as well as the community through evening adult education classes.
At Alberta Rider Elementary School, ProGrass will lead the effort to install native plants and a pioneer garden around the historic 83 year old log house located on school property. Eventually, the log house, which is on the National Historic Register, on the school grounds will become a classroom. Initially, ProGrass will help devise the master planting plan, clear invasive plants and prepare the ground for planting.
ProGrass will begin both projects in December 2008 with schools planting in Spring of 2009. All labor from ProGrass will be donated by the company.
