Can A Non-Irrigated Eco Roof Survive?

Yes, it can-and even thrive! In May 2010, ProGrass chief horticulturist Steve Varga travelled to Hungary and Austria to investigate the tried and true European methods of eco roof design and installation.

Budapest Eco Roof Sedums

In this YouTube video from ProGrass, you can see a large, non-irrigated eco roof on top of a water treatment plant in Budapest. This rooftop was planted in Fall of 2009, about 5 months before the video was shot. As the Diadem USA representative says, in the first year, they hope for about 15% infill of plants, with a larger percentage in years two and three. European eco roofs are generally planted with the idea of long term building and structural benefits, not as much for aesthics as in the U.S.

If you have questions about sedums, eco roofs or the soil composition used for planting, send Steve Varga a question through the Ask The Expert link.
