Summer Heat

We have been so lucky this summer. I don't know about you, but I am not a fan of hot weather. These last few days have been a little too hot for me. I have noticed that many more plants have been wilting on these hot days than we'd normally see in the summer. Because it was cooler than average this Spring and Summer, plant foliage has not had a chance to develop a typical waxy protective layer this year.

To be sure that your plants are happy, here are a few things to keep in mind during hot weather:

  • Check all newly-installed plants for stress. Plants which were put into the ground in the last 12 months still may not have a strong root system. Give them extre spot watering.
  • Inspect your sprinklers for good coverage and check for clogged nozzles, poorly-aimed heads and broken drip emitters.  Get these things fixed or adjusted.
  • Adjust sprinkler run times to add 10-20% more water only on hot days, then go back to normal watering.
  • Resist the desire to water extra days. It is best to just stick to 3-4 days and water longer and deeper.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Steve
