What Are Voles?

Voles are small rodents that are often mistaken for mice. Instead of invading your home, they spend most of their lives in lawns and gardens, creating shallow runways through the grass while feeding on roots, bulbs, and other plant material. They can reproduce quickly, which means a small problem can become a much bigger one if left unchecked.

Signs You May Have Voles

Voles leave behind some very recognizable clues, including:

• Narrow, winding runways across the surface of your lawn

• Small burrow openings hidden in the grass or mulch

• Grass that appears chewed or clipped close to the soil

• Dead or thinning patches of turf

• Gnaw marks on the base of young trees, shrubs, and woody plants

  
  

Unlike moles, voles don't create large mounds of soil. Their tunnels are typically right at the surface, leaving visible pathways through the grass instead of raised ridges or volcano-shaped dirt piles.
